St Columba’s has an impressive, well stocked library with about 10000 items. There is a huge emphasis on reading within the school and the library plays a big role throughout the school. The school places great emphasis on reading, thus the library plays an important role.
Pupils are encouraged to explore various avenues of both fiction and non-fiction. There are always books on display as "recommended reading" or as "firm favourites" Fun activities are held during the year, including "Reading week", Hooked on Books, Readathon and Character Day. New books are purchased every year and often books are donated by parents and friends.
Junior Primary In the junior primary the focus is on encouraging the children to read a book or more a week as they are now allowed to borrow from the library. As books nowadays are so very expensive the children are taught how to store and care for the borrowed books and how to check the books for damage. The junior primary books are marked with coloured dots. The Non-Fiction books, Grade 1, Grade 2 and Grade 3 books are all marked with different dots for easy identification by the children. At the beginning of each year the children start on the books according to their grade and it is always a great challenge to read enough books and to develop their reading skills so as to be allowed to take out books from the higher grades section before reaching that grade.
Senior Primary The senior primary children continue to be encouraged to read as they also borrow books on a weekly basis. The children are now taught more about the library and how it works, including the differences between fiction and non-fiction. They are introduced to the Dewey system and how information is stored in a library and how to access that information. The children are encouraged to read as much as possible and discover that many of the exciting stories on the big screen are actually from much more exciting books like the Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling and The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis’s Narnia Series.
The school has a dedicated group of library monitors and trainee monitors headed by two Library Prefects.
