We learn about music by making music!
Music Education fosters an appreciation of the arts. Children enjoy music by their active involvement in dramatization and instrumental play. Music Activities at St Columba’s include singing, guided listening, movement and dance, playing of percussion instruments and notations
Pre-Primary
Very young children appreciate different types of music as part of the world they are coming to know. In music class, the young child experiences pleasure, joy and creative expression. Listening skills are developed whilst the range and flexibility of the child’s voice is stimulated through singing. Music activities aid the physical development of the child. Various percussion instruments are used to stimulate rhythmic awareness.

Junior Primary Music activities seek to nurture the child’s growing awareness and expressiveness. From seven to nine years, children tend to be aware of different feelings and moods. Music activities give them the opportunity to express emotions in socially acceptable ways. Songs, rounds and canons found in the immediate environment are sung. Rhythmic awareness is developed through body percussion and by playing percussion instruments to accompany songs sung together.
Senior Primary The children’s awareness of the broader social and cultural environment is developed. Songs from various cultures form part of the repertoire. The children gain practical experience by playing on melodic instruments such as xylophones and African drums. Knowledge of the various genres of music such as Classical, Jazz, Opera, Traditional African and Kwaito form part of the music curriculum.
